The Migration Survey had been annually undertaken by the National Statistical Office since 1974. It only collected data on in-migrants to the Bangkok Metropolis. During 1983-1990, the scope of this survey was extended to cover the vicinity of the Bangkok Metropolis and regional urban growth centres in each region. Since the National Econpmic and Social Development Plan has emphasized on the distribution of economic growth to the regional area. As a result, people tend to migrate more, especially rural people who move to seek jobs in the urban areas. Started from 1992, this survey has been conducted every 2 years and is enlarged to cover all provinces of the country to obtain data at the national and regional level. The objective of this survey is to collect the basic data on demographic and socio-economic characteristics of migrants and non-migrants, including the data about movements such as reasons for migration, fequencies of migration, decision makers, ect. Data obtained from this survey will serve the policy makers and planners in formulating the National Development Plan regarding the human settlement and distribution policies. They can also be used in establishing projects or measurements for solving problems stream from migration.
